How I took Xero from £56K to a rapid £150M – part 2
Tuesday Jan 31, 2023
Tuesday Jan 31, 2023
Join us for the second part of our talk with Gary Turner, a forward thinker in business who helped turned Xero into a global leader in cloud accounting – raising its initial £56K UK revenue and a staff of three to a rapid £150M and 600+ staff in just a few years.
Xero is now worth over $10BN, and Gary continues to serve as a non-executive director at the Xero subsidiary, Planday alongside developing his new company, Everscale where he guides and inspires businesses on high growth and leadership.
This second part takes us from the emotional talks in part 1 on how his passion for working in, and helping others in business began when he saw his own father’s small business struggle, to more on his approach to business… Such as why creating a trusting and happy working environment for his people was - and is - crucial, key advice and tips for aspiring entrepreneurs and how always looking ahead to what’s coming next in business has helped him get to where he is today.

Gary Turner on taking Xero from £56K to £150M
Tuesday Jan 17, 2023
Tuesday Jan 17, 2023
Gary has always had a visionary approach to business, which is why he left Microsoft to take on Xero, who at the time he was approached to come on board, had just £56k in UK revenue and three UK employees, but is now worth over $10BN.
Gary immediately recognised that Xero’s cloud account offering was the way forward. Xero is now a leader in cloud accounting across New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom (3.5 million+ subscribers / 180+ countries). Today, Gary continues to serve as a non-executive director at the Xero subsidiary, Planday alongside developing his new company, Everscale where he is on a mission, to guide and inspire businesses about what he learned about high growth and leadership.
Hear the first part of his inspirational story here; how his passion for working in, and helping others in business began when he saw his own father’s small business struggle, which led to the breakdown of his parent’s marriage and the repossession of his childhood home. And how always looking ahead to what’s coming next in business has helped him get to where he is today.

What do you do when you have an established, thriving business? Well, if you’re Tim Fouracre, you leave it and start another! Tim has a wealth of experience in accounting; having spent nearly 10 years (as founder) and CEO of a cloud accounting company, Clear Books Ltd. He’s also the kind of guy who likes to get things done; from starting his own career in accountancy after getting an accounting bill and ascertaining he could do the job himself, to dealing with his frustration at not being supported by his fellow shareholders in his desire to expand into banking! Tim could see a clear solution to businesses spending too much time and effort on accounting and banking systems by combining the two but there was no avenue to do this in his current business…
This lightbulb moment about combining banking and accounting led to him leaving Clear Books to start Countingup and, four years in, business is booming.
But his journey to success wasn’t as simple as current figures suggest. Tim met a lot of resistance along the way, including from his business partners, but his determination to succeed drove him on, and has revolutionised the way people run their small business.
